Wherever you live, your skin has one top priority this season. Here’s a quick guide to seasonal skincare by climate to keep your skin healthy, glowing, and supported.

If You’re in a Cold Winter Climate

The #1 thing your skin needs in winter skincare is moisture. Cold air and indoor heating pull hydration right out of your skin, leaving it dry and dull. Focus on a richer moisturizer that supports your skin barrier and locks in hydration (think ceramides or other barrier-supporting ingredients). If you add a hydrating serum underneath, even better.

If You Live in Warm or Tropical Weather Climate

Your biggest skin challenge is sun exposure. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the most important part of your routine, no exceptions. Pair it with a lightweight moisturizer or serum, and your skin will stay protected and balanced. For most people, SPF 30 or higher is a solid everyday baseline.

PS: We ALL actually need to wear sunscreen every day. 🙂

Wherever you call home, your skin can thrive with the right seasonal support.

Understanding Chronic Scar Pain: How Lucas Acupuncture Can Help https://acupuncturewoman.com/understanding-chronic-scar-pain-how-lucas-acupuncture-can-help/ Wed, 04 Sep 2024 18:08:03 +0000 https://acupuncturewoman.com/?p=3850 If you’ve undergone a cesarean section (C-section) or hysterectomy, you likely expected your wound to heal after a few months, with minimal lingering discomfort. However, for an estimated 7 to 18 percent of individuals, chronic scar pain persists long after the wound has seemingly healed. This type of pain can be both surprising and frustrating, often accompanied by symptoms such as numbness that may last for months, or even years.

Chronic scar pain can manifest in various ways. For some, the pain may be sharp and sudden, while for others, it may be a persistent dull ache. Something as simple as clothing brushing against the scar can cause discomfort, making everyday activities challenging. The reason behind this prolonged pain lies in the complexity of the body’s healing process. Nerves can be severed during surgery, and scar tissue can entrap these nerves, causing irritation. In some cases, scar tissue can extend beyond the initial wound area, leading to more widespread pain.

The reality is that this pain is not something you have to live with indefinitely. There are treatments available that can address the root cause of the discomfort and help you regain control over your body.

acupoint injection therapy

How Acupuncture and Injection Therapy Can Help

At Lucas Acupuncture, I specialize in treating chronic scar pain, especially for those who have had C-sections or hysterectomies. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of learning from medical doctors around the world while teaching them acupuncture techniques. These experiences have broadened my understanding of alternative medicine, introducing me to advanced procedures that are making a significant difference in the lives of patients.

One such procedure is injection therapy. About 5 to 6 years ago, practitioners of Chinese medicine and acupuncturists in Colorado were granted the ability to offer injection therapy as part of their treatment plans. Having been exposed to this practice earlier during my international work, I was more than ready to integrate it into my services. Injection therapy can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with acupuncture, depending on the individual needs of the patient.

What is Injection Therapy?

Injection therapy involves the use of procaine—a local anesthetic commonly used to treat functional disorders, inflammatory conditions, and both acute and chronic pain. This method can be highly effective for addressing chronic scar pain, as well as other health issues.

There are different approaches to injection therapy:

  • Local Therapy (Trigger Point Injections): These injections target specific areas of pain, such as around scar tissue, to relieve discomfort and reduce inflammation.
  • Segmental Therapy: This approach focuses on treating nerve roots and peripheral nerves to address more systemic issues caused by nerve dysfunction. Procaine works by normalizing the autonomous nervous system, which can become dysregulated after surgery, leading to pain and inflammation.

For those experiencing ongoing pain after a C-section or hysterectomy, intradermal injections around the sacrum (the base of the spine) can be particularly effective. These shallow injections help treat various conditions, including:

  • PMS
  • Fertility issues
  • Sore C-section scars or symptoms related to the procedure
  • Post-hysterectomy recovery
  • Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Low libido
  • Bladder control issues
  • General reproductive health maintenance

Why Choose Lucas Acupuncture?

At Lucas Acupuncture, my goal is to provide holistic, patient-centered care that goes beyond simply treating symptoms. I take the time to understand the unique needs of each individual and tailor treatments to address both the physical and emotional aspects of their health. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain from a past surgery or are seeking support for reproductive health, I am here to help you find relief and regain your quality of life.

Don’t let chronic scar pain or other post-surgical issues hold you back. Contact me at Lucas Acupuncture to explore how acupuncture and injection therapy can make a difference in your healing journey.

Embracing Youthful Vibrance with Chinese Medicine: The Power of Cosmetic Acupuncture https://acupuncturewoman.com/embracing-youthful-vibrance-with-chinese-medicine-the-power-of-cosmetic-acupuncture/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 19:35:47 +0000 https://acupuncturewoman.com/?p=3823

In today’s world, there is an insatiable demand for products and procedures promising to turn back the clock. Regardless of economic fluctuations, billions of dollars are spent annually on treatments designed to make us look younger, slimmer, or more beautiful. From chin implants to fat transplants, arm lifts to ear plastic surgery, there’s a procedure for nearly every body part that might cause dissatisfaction.

Interestingly, many of these cosmetic procedures have medical origins. Plastic surgery, for instance, was initially a lifesaver for those disfigured by accidents, born with deformities like cleft palates, or injured in war. The field saw significant advancements following World War I due to the need to treat soldiers’ injuries. Botox’s history is similarly rooted in medical necessity. Discovered in the 1950s, it was first used to relax hypertensive muscles and treat spasms, and it still provides relief for patients with facial, neck, or shoulder spasms.

Acupuncture, a cornerstone of Chinese medicine, also didn’t begin with cosmetic intentions. However, certain points and techniques have shown remarkable “cosmetic” outcomes over time. As a practitioner, I find immense satisfaction in using minimally invasive techniques to help people maintain their youthful appearance. The beauty of acupuncture lies in its ability to harness the body’s natural processes for rejuvenation. With Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture, we address the internal causes of aging alongside the visible signs on the skin. This dual approach is the hallmark of Chinese medicine: treating wrinkles from both the inside and the outside.

Cosmetic acupuncture stands out as one of the least aggressive procedures available for maintaining youthfulness. Unlike treatments that introduce foreign substances into the body, acupuncture promotes health and vibrancy from within. It uses your body’s own mechanisms to foster a youthful glow, avoiding the need for toxins or invasive measures.

Chinese medicine offers a holistic path to beauty, creating an inner vitality that radiates outward. If you’re looking to enhance your youthful appearance naturally, consider making an appointment for cosmetic acupuncture today. Embrace the true essence of beauty with a treatment that nurtures your health inside and out.

Unlocking the Secrets of Longevity with Chinese Medicine https://acupuncturewoman.com/unlocking-the-secrets-of-longevity-with-chinese-medicine/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 19:33:36 +0000 https://acupuncturewoman.com/?p=3679 chinese medicine

For over two decades, my focus has been on exploring the anti-aging and health-promoting benefits of Chinese medicine. This ancient practice not only treats ailments but also nurtures overall wellness, helping to maintain a balanced state of health. Regular sessions allow us to detect and address issues early, bolstering the immune system and contributing to emotional well-being.

Chinese medicine doesn’t just target symptoms—it aims to enhance the body’s functionality, thereby improving both health span and age span. Health span refers to the period of one’s life spent in good health, not merely existence. By prioritizing wellness and healthy aging, we can positively impact both our longevity and quality of life.

Improving health span involves holistic lifestyle choices:

1. Eat a Healthy Diet: Embrace whole foods, vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins while minimizing processed foods and sugars.

2. Exercise Regularly: Incorporate movement into your daily routine, whether it’s yoga, walking, or sports—find what suits you best.

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Strive for a weight that supports overall health and vitality.

4. Stay Hydrated: Water is essential for bodily functions; ensure you’re drinking enough throughout the day.

5. Moderate Alcohol Consumption: Limit alcohol intake for better health outcomes.

6. Avoid Smoking: Quitting or avoiding smoking is crucial for lung health and overall well-being.

But health isn’t just physical—it’s also about joy and connection. Studies consistently show that positive social interactions reduce stress and enhance overall health:

– Nurture Social Connections: Stay connected with supportive friends and family members.

– Engage in Activities You Enjoy: Join groups or clubs that align with your interests and passions.

– Volunteer: Contributing to a cause you believe in can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

By integrating these lifestyle choices and embracing the principles of Chinese medicine, we pave the way towards a longer, healthier life. Let’s embark on this journey together, prioritizing not just years lived, but the quality of those years. After all, aging well is about thriving, not just surviving.

Unlocking Athletic Recovery: The Power of Acupuncture and Acupressure https://acupuncturewoman.com/unlocking-athletic-recovery-the-power-of-acupuncture-and-acupressure/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 19:38:25 +0000 https://acupuncturewoman.com/?p=3642 a man holding his sore arm after working out

Introduction:

Do you often find yourself grappling with muscle soreness post-workout? Perhaps your teen athlete complains about sore muscles after a rigorous practice session or game. If so, relief may be closer than you think. In this blog, we explore the transformative benefits of acupuncture and acupressure in alleviating muscle soreness, backed by compelling research.

Understanding Acupressure’s Impact on Lactic Acid Levels:

Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine practice, has been gaining traction in sports circles for its potential to enhance athletes’ recovery post-exercise. A recent study delves into the efficacy of press-tack needle acupuncture in reducing blood lactic acid levels after intense physical activity.

The Study:

Conducted with twenty-four sports students, the study divided participants into two groups: an acupuncture group and a control group. In the acupuncture group, press-tack needles were strategically placed on PC-6 Neiguan and ST-36 Zusanli points 30 minutes before engaging in high-intensity exercise. Lactic acid levels were measured at 5 and 30 minutes post-exercise.

Results:

The findings revealed intriguing insights into the impact of acupuncture on lactic acid levels. At 5 minutes post-exercise, the acupuncture group exhibited higher mean levels of lactic acid compared to the control group. However, at the 30-minute mark, the acupuncture group showcased lower mean levels of lactic acid than the control group. Notably, the reduction in lactic acid levels from 5 to 30 minutes post-exercise was statistically higher in the acupuncture group than in the control group.

Conclusion:

The study’s conclusion resonates with a powerful message: press-tack needle acupuncture plays a pivotal role in reducing lactic acid levels after high-intensity physical exercise. This reinforces the efficacy of both acupuncture and acupressure in promoting post-workout recovery.

Beyond Acupuncture: A Multifaceted Approach to Pain Relief:

The blog further emphasizes that the practitioner offers a comprehensive range of services beyond acupuncture and acupressure. These include Gua Sha medical massage and pain relief injections using homeopathics and high-activated oxygen, also known as ozone. The anecdote of a patient experiencing immediate relief from shoulder/upper back pain through injections highlights the versatility of these pain relief techniques.

Why Sports Teams Need Acupuncturists:

Shifting gears, the blog explores the significance of having acupuncturists on sports teams. In the realm of sports, recovery after exercise holds paramount importance for athletes. Citing various studies, the blog underscores that acupuncture is one modality that can significantly enhance the rate of an athlete’s recovery.

Closing Thoughts:

As athletes and fitness enthusiasts continue to seek holistic approaches to recovery, acupuncture and acupressure emerge as powerful tools in the pursuit of relieving muscle soreness and promoting overall well-being. The integration of traditional practices with modern sports science opens up new avenues for enhancing athletic performance and recovery. If you’re ready to experience the transformative benefits of acupuncture and acupressure, schedule an appointment today and embark on a journey towards optimal recovery.

Four ways that acupuncture can help relieve holiday stress https://acupuncturewoman.com/four-ways-that-acupuncture-can-help-relieve-holiday-stress/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 18:09:37 +0000 https://acupuncturewoman.com/?p=3624 Christmas Tree with presents underneath

As we embrace the festive season with open arms, I find myself pondering the paradox that encapsulates the holidays— a delightful mix of joy and, at times, a hint of stress. This contemplation inspired me to pen a haiku, encapsulating the essence of the season:

“It has all started… the sounds of the holidays. Joyful or stressful?”

I shared this on my Facebook page, sparking a lively discussion. Many resonated with the sentiments, expressing a resounding “both.” It’s an acknowledgment that the holiday season, while often brimming with joy, can also bring about its fair share of stress. So, why the juxtaposition of “holidays” and “stress” in the same breath? Because, as we all know, it’s a nuanced journey—one that sometimes leads to merriment and, on occasion, to moments of overwhelm.

But fret not, for support is at hand for those navigating the delicate balance. In the spirit of aiding you through the whirlwind of the holidays, I’d like to shed light on four ways acupuncture can be a beacon of relief in times of stress:

1. Pain and Tension Relief:

Acupuncture works wonders in alleviating pain and muscle tension, especially those neck aches from prolonged screen time. By reducing inflammation and enhancing circulation, it brings a sense of ease to the body.

2. Stress and Anxiety Reduction:

Experience the calming embrace of acupuncture, which acts as a balm for stress and anxiety. The session is not just a physical reprieve but a holistic journey to tranquility.

3. Improved Sleep Quality:

Quality sleep is a precious commodity during busy holiday times. Acupuncture can contribute to a restful night, leaving you energized and ready to take on the day.

4. Enhanced Digestion:

The connection between stress and digestion is undeniable. Acupuncture steps in to regulate the nervous system, fostering a calm environment that promotes better digestion.

As we navigate the holiday hustle, consider booking an acupuncture session to ensure your well-being remains a priority. If you find yourself in need of support or a moment of reprieve, don’t hesitate to make an appointment [insert appointment link].

Wishing you a season filled with both joy and tranquility,

Self-care during the holiday season. It’s not selfish … it’s SELF LOVE! https://acupuncturewoman.com/self-care-during-the-holiday-season-its-not-selfish-its-self-love/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 18:22:29 +0000 https://acupuncturewoman.com/?p=3612 meditating woman on bed

Self-care during the holidays is essential to ensure that you can truly enjoy the festive season and maintain your physical and mental well-being. The holiday season can be a hectic and often stressful time with various obligations, such as shopping, cooking, and social gatherings. Here are some key ways to prioritize self-care during this busy period.

  1. First and foremost, it’s crucial to manage your time and set boundaries. This means creating a realistic schedule and not overcommitting to social events and activities. Learning to say no when necessary can alleviate some pressure and allow you to focus on what truly matters. In this YouTube video, I talk about using your imagination to reduce stress.

2. Gratitude helps you fall in love with the life you already have. Taking even a minute to think about a thing or two for which you are grateful, can change your perspective and mood.

3. Incorporate mindfulness or some relaxation technique into your day. The holiday season can come with heightened stress so taking a few moments for even a few deep breaths, can help you stay centered and calm. Here is a minute of relaxation for you!

4. It’s also important to get enough sleep. Rest is crucial for your physical and mental health, and it will give you the energy to tackle holiday tasks. My SLEEP essential oil blend can help you there.

5. Maintaining a healthy diet and staying active can be challenging during the holidays, but it’s essential to look after your body. Try to balance indulgent treats with nutritious meals and find ways to stay active, even if it’s just going for a brisk walk with a loved one. Here is a printable guide to Chinese medicine food therapy. Call me if you would like a little more information about it; 303-947-6224.

6. Connecting with loved ones is a significant aspect of self-care. Spend quality time with family and friends, but also carve out some time for yourself. This could be reading a book, taking a relaxing bath, or engaging in a hobby you enjoy. Put my CALM essential oil blend in your bath for an extra treat or soak your feet in a warm bowl of water using it.

7. Finally, don’t forget to seek support if needed. The holiday season can be difficult for those dealing with stress, anxiety, or loneliness. I treat emotional stress so please reach out to me if you’re struggling and remember that it’s okay to ask for help.

REMEMBER, by prioritizing self-care during the holidays, you can reduce stress, enhance your overall well-being, and truly savor the joy of the season. Remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish; it’s an essential component of a happy and healthy holiday season.

Stay wonderful!

Do you know the statistics about skin cancer? https://acupuncturewoman.com/do-you-know-the-statistics-about-skin-cancer/ Fri, 29 Sep 2023 19:41:22 +0000 https://acupuncturewoman.com/?p=3509 We have been loving the sun! Living in Colorado, that comes easy. We also know that learning to recognize skin cancer can be the difference between an early, treatable diagnosis vs. a later stage diagnosis which will be more invasive to treat.

Here are some facts that you need to know:

  1. Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk of melanoma. There are actually multiple types of skin cancer. The most common types are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Melanoma, while less common than basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, is more aggressive and accounts for the highest mortality rate. The good news is melanoma is a highly preventable form of skin cancer. By taking steps to minimize sun exposure and protecting the skin during sun exposure, most people will have a low risk of developing melanoma.
  2. With early detection, the 5 year survival rate for melanoma is 99%. Early intervention is essential for effective melanoma treatment. One of the main reasons melanoma is associated with such a high mortality rate is that many melanoma cases are discovered in the advanced stages. But with early intervention, melanoma is very responsive to treatment so that makes regular skin checks imperative!
  3. More than 2 people an hour die from melanoma in the U.S. Skin cancer prevention and early intervention are key to reducing the number of annual deaths related to this condition.
  4. 1 in 5 Americans develop skin cancer before the age of 70. The risk of developing skin cancer and other skin health issues increases with age. From cosmetic changes to serious health concerns, it becomes increasingly important to visit a dermatologist regularly as we grow older.
  5. 9500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the U.S. More people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer than all other forms of cancer combined. Skin cancer is very common, and in most cases, it’s a highly treatable form of cancer. The sooner a dermatologist can diagnose skin cancer and begin treatment, the more likely patients are to make a full recovery. Regular self-screenings are essential, especially for patients who are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer.

THE MAIN MESSAGE? Protect your skin when you are in the sun, even on cloudy days, do regular skin checks yourself, see a dermatologist once a year for a full body skin check.
